“And since I got back, I’ve barely slept a night all the way through.” The old elf wizard sat on the small stool, staring at the swirling tea leaves in his steaming mug.

“Well, from the sound of it, it is lucky you got back at all.” The human ranger took a deep breath and poured a bit of whiskey from his flask into his own cup of tea. “How many did you say there were? Six?” Tim looked up from his mug at Thaylinn, who was staring out the cabin window at the setting sun beyond the lake. The elf nodded. “Well, as you know, old friend, I was trapped in the Abyss for many years. It is all kind of fading from memory. I did not do much battle there. I mean, yeah, I was tortured and stuff, but I was hooded most of the time and pain fades from memory.”

“I know Tim, and I am glad your soul is intact. We all are. The Dreamwater needs its Sherriff.  Technically, I was never actually in the Abyss. Those six succubi were the last enemy to face us in a final battle at the Dawn of Time. And although I was the only one in my party to survive the trip back here to the Dreamwater, my soul is broken. Rhoen, Lagozed, and dear sweet Aelar, all dead…Lost in time.” Thaylinn reached into a fold of his gray robe and pulled out a fist-sized bundle wrapped in leather. “I grabbed this, the meaning of our ill-fated quest, before I saw the time portal and my friends, collapse into the void.” Thaylinn took the whiskey flask from Tim and spiked his own drink, took a slow sip and then began to unwrap the object on the table.

The object glowed from within, a deep opalescent radiance that transcended anything from nature. Tim could recognize this as an object of deep, ancient magic, possibly druidic, possibly even proto-druid. “50,000 years” Thaylinn whispered. “Across many oceans of time. Behold. The Gherivon.”

Tim raised an eyebrow. “Mighty name. I’ve heard of it before. Penelius told me once of a world-ruining device by that name. We were talking at one point about going to get it ourselves. That is what you were doing? How long have you had this thing?”

“Nearly twenty years Tim. I’ve kept it here, in Maiah, safe. But that time is done Tim. I can’t keep it anymore. I am departing to the West and where I am going, this can not come.”

“Oh lord, you’re giving it to me, ain’tcha?” Tim’s drawl always brought a smile to Thaylinn’s face. Tim sighed again and pulled an herbal cigarette from his belt, lit it and continued. “I’ve had many experiences with old, powerful weapons. Hell, I threw on of the Swords of Doom into that lake right there. (see Ethilistyr) Shall we do that with this?”

“No, afraid not old friend. That won’t keep it safe. Tim, listen to me. I need you to take this thing far away. You are the only one who can do this. The Gherivon needs to be taken to my younger sister, Safein, to the land I am from: Theriol.”

“Wait. Hold up. You want me to walk, because I don’t know how else to get there, across the whole of Dao Tyr to give this little rock to your kid sister?”

“Well that is the long and the short of it, I suppose.”

“Thaylinn, that is going to take me twenty years to walk that distance.” The elf had nothing to say at that. Tim sat with his mouth agape. “This will be the last thing I do with my life. You know that I am an old man too, right?”

“I wouldn’t ask unless I was certain there was no other way. I believe that there is great fate left in this object Tim and I believe you, and my sister, have some great roll to play still. I can discern the stars aligning in a particular way. Please Tim, do this.”

“Okay, I guess. I’ll grab my boots.” Tim stood, extinguished his cigarette and finished the whiskey.

“Just like that? you are leaving now? Humans are astonishing”

“Yeah, just like that. There is only one way to start a long journey, and that’s to start it. Tell me though, Thaylinn…” Tim paused, lacing up his boots. “What can this thing do?”

“Well, for one, I can tell you that the power in this thing can ground any dragon.”

“Any dragon?”

“Any dragon.”

“Well hell, okay then. It just might come in handy. I think I’ll wear it as a belt buckle.”

Wolfdog and the Dark Pana

“I saw her in there! That tower of lightning. I swung my axe down again and again, like I was madly working on bringing down a great tree. There in the light, crackling and burning all around me. The Dark Pana! dancing. The horrid Fay Queen was dancing and evading my blows. She was there to kill me! The dark spirit of my own land, risen up and to find me here. Here, on the edge of nothing! Her. My worst enemy…my perfect enemy. She and I represent the war for the soul of our land. Sweet Maiah. So far away. Will I ever see her again?” Wolfdog.

Map of Maiah

present population 73,000 estimated within 5 miles of Woodhelm.  Maiah was, until recently, a human community. Sure, the Bessallyn Family has plenty of elves in the family tree and orcs have always been thoroughly integrated into Maiahen society, but it was rare to see the many other races on the Ravens Walk that you can in the year 1135. The populations is still about half human and then orcs and elves. Now there are communities of gnomes at Eiser Gein, dragonborn at Ano Ythmir and eladrin at Eddin Kahl.

The Farwalkers, The governing council of Maiah

Posted in Farwalkers, Maiah, Men, Orcs, The Fey People on June 11, 2011 by coyoteandthunder

The Farwalkers. Governing council of the Rural Capital of Maiah. 1135. 7.

Caulfig, a dwarven elder druid has been working as the mayor of Maiah for the past ten years since Judicia the White was stolen by the risen Draco-lich Hundroon. Caulfig’s diplomatic, rhetorical and linguistic skills sustain the region like none other through this unprecedented period of economic growth through out the rural capital.

Gareth Morethail, who faught beside Tim Tigeon at the Battle of Oessthelial 35 years ago. Gareth was trained as a Wreather early on but then he hung out with the then mayor, Heindrich Tigeon too long, so some say and became a ruthless fighter. Loyalty to the Sherriff and to the Tigean family means everything to surly Garth the Bronze.

Brayden Tigeon, Heindrich’s younger brother was a hero in the final wars of the sixth age. Sullen and misanthropic like his elder sibling, Brayden is also known of as the Wolf since his brother, Wolfdog left Maiah forever after Aolbeth’s death.

Glysell FoundEarth is a half-elf planeswalker who scouts for the Wreathers and keeps Maiah safe from extraplanar forces.

Ryrdenn Mumbai, who has come to the aid of Maiah’s civil defense numerous times and has gained the sure confidence of the Farwalkers even though his story is a bit strange. He claims to be the greatgrandfather of Tiki, the Red Queen who has been missing for many years. He has come from the past to help the future.

The Aumbree, a fey spirit, is a secret confidante to the Farwalkers.

Yrthoi, an aven spirit, aid to the Wreathers often sits on Maiahan Town Council.

The Druids of Maiah

Posted in Maiah, Men, Orcs, The Shadow Road, The Sherriff on June 11, 2011 by coyoteandthunder

The Druids, also known as the Court of the Nine Stars, also known collectively as the Wreathers are the most important trans-political organization in the Greater Sorado, and nowhere is this more demonstrated than the rural capital of Maiah.

Just one mile out of the woodlands of Maiah you will find a barren landscape, known by the orcs as Poolis Fyr, the most important druidic magic-site in the Dreamwater. Burials of those who have fallen in battles line the lake like an infinite number of memorials. Druids are essentially, Gatekeepers. They keep natives here and keep outsiders out. That is their primary purpose and the orcs of Ethilistyr have always been the inheritors of this tradition.

Kyralla, daughter of Hearthys, is the leader of the Orcish druids of Maiah. Hearthys died last summer and she is having a hard time adjusting to her new found responsibiliity.

Mahc’Eldynn is an eladrin druid who some believe is over two thousand years old. You can find Mahc’Eldynn at The Fellow Song pub in downtown Maiah every afternoon at two o’clock for a shot of Oba Whiskey.

The Dark Cloak druids, the military force of the Wreathers, helped liberate the Shadowroad, along with Tim Tigean, 25 years ago. There are over three hundred Dark Cloaks who camp around Poolis Fyr and keep the waters of the lake safe.

Wolfdog and Aolyn

Posted in Maiah, The Sherriff on February 9, 2011 by coyoteandthunder

Aolyn,

I wish I could have been there more as you grew up.  I still deal everyday with your mother’s death and still curse the gods for taking your brother when he was not even a year old.  Now that you are a woman, you remind me so much of your mother in both beauty and ferocity. I never wanted the life of an adventurer for you, all it ever meant for me was a life of anger and violence. Since it seems to be the life for which you are fated, I pray that you know great glory, but even more, I wish you love.

Aolin, know that I loved your mother more than myself. I have told you the story of her death many times before, but I will tell it again. It was a cold day in summer when the Dragongods returned and killed so many. The rat bastard Blendhavin and his nefarioius sons, lead by Lethorian, made a deal with your mother and her aunt Sarafina when they went looking into the shadowfel for the angel warrior Jael. His infernal boat, the Illyria, was to take her and bring her home. All we found was the necklace I gave her on our wedding day, the necklace she would never take off. As you know, we have never found the Illyria or its terrible captain. That is the worst of the pain I live with daily, the awful mystery that feeds the devil in my heart.

I hope that you don’t keep anger towards me for being absent in your childhood. The Tigeans did such a good job raising you and know that I am very proud of all that you are. You mother is too, whever her soul lies.

With love,

Heinrich

More notes on the culture of the community of Maiah

1. The leaf of the Oba tree is brewed to make a caffeinated beverage that is most regularly served with milk and honey

2. The Center of Maiahn culture is a large festival hall called “The Fellow Song”. The structure is over a hundred years old and run by Eric Besallyn, father of Ari and Judicia. pictured below

3. Orcs are deeply integrated into Maiahn culture.

4. PoolisTyr is a henge for the worship practice of druids. The leader of the Maiahn orcs is called Hearthys and is a wise although grim elder of the community.

5. The head druid is named Gareth, a man, a good friend of the sherriff. Gareth is also the chief vintner and head brewer of the town.

6. Maiah is the ritual center of the human population in the South Dreamwater and festivals are common. Every two weeks or so there is an astologically significant date which means that a party will happen.

7. The most common breed of dog in Maiah is the wolf hound.

8. Carl the Red has been mayor of Maiah for over forty years and he is now bed ridden and not expected to survive the winter of 1111.

The Return of the Stickarein Blade, the First Sword of Glory

Posted in Maiah, the Archfey on August 2, 2010 by coyoteandthunder

“A well placed sharp dagger is often more deadly a hundred hammers.” -Zarconus

Following the Ebon Boon, Zarconus of Bahamut, Ronin of Sinys Oebyr and Ferrus of Kord spearheaded a three man, lone operation into Besenthia to face the Death Knight ruler of the newly risen Necropolis, Besenthia. There in the courtyard of the ancient city, the three knights faced not only the lord Kurkeliodon but also his Vesper Ghoul (undead creatures of potent elemental power) and a standing guard of many ghouls.

It was the Dark Pana who watched and hope for men to destroy the Death Knight, indeed a figure she had a long relationship with when Kurk was himself a man. There was no trace of his former humanity in the evil thing that was ruling Besenthia and to whom she watched Zarconus smote by righteous hand. So impowered by ancient and unknown whispers, The Dark Pana made herself known to the three knights upon completion of their duty. Ferrus, who held the shards of the Stickarein blade, revealed them at the archfey’s request. With a word, the blade was remade and Zarconus could feeling the overwhelming of Glory radiate from his one time honor blade. “Avenge now young knight…” she whispered to the knight of Bahamut. With Besenthia overthrown and the Stickarein blade return, it seems the power of Ethilistyr is amassing powerful weapons against the Black wave that continues t beat back the world of men.

Map of Arboria, the rising of Oesenthia

Posted in Maiah on August 2, 2010 by coyoteandthunder

Below is a map of Arboria, the country to the west of Maiah. Click to enlarge. The account that follows relates how the Necropolis known as Oesenthia (or East Church which has been an eladrin masoleum reaching back to antiquity,) has become an active, furious and military force with the coming of the Ebon Boon on the Hunter’s Moon, year 1111. It is these legions, lead by the Beholder brothers, Merdel and Oaxthen and their fel leader, Proticulus the necromancer who continue having pinned Daelfort, imminently move against Maiah.

The Storm Herd, a name for the enormous herd of undead pegasai that issues forth from the a confluence in the rivers of Barrenton and Fed’l Fein that will soon no longer exist.

Heading south, history will come to know this moment as when the Horned King made his presence know across the Dreamwater and darkness covered DaelFort.

The City, with the exception of the Library and the Church, are evacuated within an afternoon under the protection of the Deeptread Merrow, a group of eladrin whoworship Osha and Melora.

The Necropolis of Oessenthia rises at the confluence  of the rivers, forever changing the course of the Fed’l Fein River.

The rising of the City of the Dead sends forth a flood across the fields of Sindoe, killing nearly 10 families who had farmed the land since before antiquity.

Rumors abound of a terrible floating monster with one tremendous eye and an insatiable maw that eats children and spits out the bones.

The Dream Thush, a servant of the Archfey known as the Thunderbird, escorts hundreds of other innocent souls to safety.

The Absolver Thrull, Absencion, a being of Gavin Wel comes to aid the families of the Deluge of Sindoe and together with Terese, a fey power with a golden spear called Pollenbright, encounter the thing with the eye, whom they called Merdel and having defeated it returned in triumph to Daelfort.

Merdel was reconstituted by powers then unknown and attacked Daelfort with stalks of ray like destruction that spread wanton violence killing hundreds.

It is learned by the Dwarven Miner, Jamul, how once lived in HammerGuard, that there was an angel of Gavin Wel, known only as the Wings of Aesthir, who betrayed the people of Dreamwater and infomed the Storm Shaman Lovisa Balduvian, an acolyte of the Horned King, the secret of Everlife: a mystical process that may or may not include Ebonstone.

Ebonstone is mined at BlackMine and it made into art and currency by local artisans at Daelfort.

A legion of wraiths issue forth from Oesenthia and only fire from the fey pyres of the woods keep them at bay. The place known as Accesltamn becomes the front line of a horrid battle. There are angels of fire from Gavin Wel that come to defend the rural people north of the Diamond Meadows.

Saffri Erikthael, a ranger woman of Gavin Wel infultrates Oessenthia  with the help of young Isus Tigean, a loyalist of the Sherriff and indeed carries a royal name. They are armed with the Wanderer’s Twig, a potent divination, a gift of Osha. They learn of the EbonBoon, a power that is rising in the Dreamwater and will destroy most of South County.

The Suspensia, a patrol of Men and Elves from Daelfort, armed by the Sherriff hold the line that defines the suburbane center of Daelfort. A patrol of demon-like zombies, whom en now call Shades, march across and do battle mightly with the men of uspensia at the site of Rockir. The timber forts of Eaglin and Marnyr are erected and enforced with crystal underpinings at the funding of the mayor of Farthrow, an honorable man named Chaeska Tresserhorn.

Three-headed undead horse-like beasts called by men Mispmares descend on Eaglin and the Angelic Curator of the library at Berrenberg meets them in combat, both are condemmed to die by the Cabal Archon, Proticulus, a necromancer in service of the Horned King. Joined by the Executioner and the Disciple of Malice, Proticulus has become a major force in South County.

The battles still rage. Isus contacts his great uncle, Elmer, cousin of the Sherriff, a beast of a man who spent many years in Hyth Amir and has taken on the title Riftcutter, joins the mayor of Beglum, Chaeska, Together they build  Dael fort as a military stronghold of Men.

It is then learned that Merdel is one of two, so called Beholders, the other, named Oaxthen, lies north of the town and exists to vex the people of Arborea.
